Pour water into a large pot, add salt, and place over high heat. When it comes to a boil, add the Zlato Polje dumplings and cook for 10 minutes. Be careful not to overcook them. Place the oven rack in the middle and preheat the oven to 200 °C (390 °F).

Make the gratin topping: In a bowl, combine the sour cream, eggs, and a pinch of salt. Whisk together until smooth.

Arrange the dumplings in a single layer in a large baking dish. Pour the topping over them, and if you’re making the savory version, sprinkle with grated Parmesan. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes at 200 °C (390 °F).

sweet dumplings
Place the butter in a pan. Once it melts, add the breadcrumbs. Sauté for 5 minutes, stirring regularly.

Remove the dumplings from the oven and place them on a plate. Serve the savory dumplings with chopped chives, and drizzle the sweet ones with the toasted breadcrumbs and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
