Slovenian Cheese Dumplings Gratin is simply divine, and in today’s recipe I’m presenting two options: savory as a side dish and a sweet one as a dessert.

Our eldest son is the biggest fan of Slovenian Štuklji (Farmer's cheese dumplings) in all shapes and flavors. We love making them at home from scratch, but every now and then we also enjoy these slightly larger pillows of joy from Zlato Polje. Sometimes we make them sweet, sometimes savory. In this recipe, we’re sharing an idea for both versions. And not only that—you can make both at the same time, in the same baking dish, which is really convenient. You’ll only need easily accessible ingredients and a bit of time for baking—less than an hour in total.

Sweet or savory?

The choice is yours. These curd dumplings can be a side dish or a dessert. But we absolutely love them because:

  • they have a wonderfully golden, baked exterior
  • the savory dumplings are a perfect side dish for festive meals, various cutlets, and roasts
  • the sweet dumplings make a lovely dessert — just sweet enough, quick and easy to prepare
  • children adore them, and we adults can’t resist them either
  • they are best when served fresh

What to serve with savory cheese dumplings gratin

Serve the sweet gratinated dumplings as a standalone dessert, and the savory dumplings with one of the following main dishes:

Storing

We prefer to serve gratinated dumplings fresh.

If we have any leftovers, they can be stored. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Before serving, reheat them well in a pan.

METHOD

  • štruklji - Cheese Dumplings

    Pour water into a large pot, add salt, and place over high heat. When it comes to a boil, add the Zlato Polje dumplings and cook for 10 minutes. Be careful not to overcook them. Place the oven rack in the middle and preheat the oven to 200 °C (390 °F).

    Make the gratin topping: In a bowl, combine the sour cream, eggs, and a pinch of salt. Whisk together until smooth.

  • bake

    Arrange the dumplings in a single layer in a large baking dish. Pour the topping over them, and if you’re making the savory version, sprinkle with grated Parmesan. Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes at 200 °C (390 °F).

    Place the butter in a pan. Once it melts, add the breadcrumbs. Sauté for 5 minutes, stirring regularly.

  • serve

    Remove the dumplings from the oven and place them on a plate. Serve the savory dumplings with chopped chives, and drizzle the sweet ones with the toasted breadcrumbs and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
